Website Design with Code or with WordPress?

One of the biggest challenges for business owners when stepping into the digital world is deciding whether their website should be built with coding from scratch or with WordPress. In this article, I want to explain whether you really need a fully coded website, whether a no-code website looks unprofessional or has SEO issues, which option is more cost-effective, and which one is more Google-friendly.

Before anything, let’s first understand what WordPress actually is.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a type of CMS (Content Management System). In simple terms, it’s a system that lets you manage and publish website content without any coding.

The idea behind it was to save time in website development and make website management easier. Developers created a set of ready-made code so you wouldn’t need to code everything from scratch every time you wanted to add a new feature to your website.

Over time, more and more developers started adding new features to this system in the form of plugins, which reduced the need for custom coding even further.

But does this mean you can build your WordPress website yourself in just a couple minutes? Or that developers are no longer needed? Let’s get into that.

It’s true that WordPress has made the job of developers and designers much easier. However, website design still requires real expertise—whether you’re working with code or WordPress.

To build a professional website, you still need someone who understands how to use plugins, tools, and custom code (when needed) to achieve the exact result a business needs.

Working with WordPress plugins, understanding business requirements, and building the right functionality for each project requires time, experience, and patience—something not everyone has.

On the other hand, coding is still necessary because it allows developers to build custom features or implement very specific and unique designs that go beyond standard solutions.

Now let’s compare coded websites and WordPress websites in terms of design, features, security, SEO, usability, and cost.

Design & Features

When it comes to design and features, coding and WordPress are very close to each other.

Whatever functionality you need—whether it’s e-commerce features, user dashboards, or anything else—you can implement it with both approaches.

Also, both WordPress and custom-coded websites allow you to create fully customized designs. Of course, coding gives you slightly more flexibility, but in 99.9% of cases, anything you can build with code can also be achieved with WordPress.

And just to give you a better idea of WordPress’s popularity: around 45% of all websites on the internet are built with WordPress. That means roughly 4 to 5 out of every 10 websites you visit are powered by WordPress. Pretty surprising, right?

Security

In terms of security, custom-coded websites can be considered slightly more secure because WordPress, due to its popularity and open structure, is more often targeted.

However, a properly maintained WordPress website—with updated plugins and security tools—has no real security issues to worry about.

Also, because WordPress is used by millions of websites, vulnerabilities are usually discovered and fixed very quickly.

So in practice, security between the two is almost equal.

SEO

When it comes to SEO, Google does not give any special advantage to either WordPress or custom-coded websites.

However, WordPress makes SEO easier thanks to plugins like Rank Math and Yoast, which simplify things like site structure, meta tags, and content publishing.

On the other hand, a well-built custom-coded website can perform better due to faster speed and cleaner code. But if it’s not well optimized, it can easily fall behind a WordPress site.

Overall, there’s no major difference—especially if you’re not running a massive platform like Amazon or Uber.

Ease of Use

This is where WordPress really stands out.

A WordPress website is much easier to manage. Making changes, publishing content, and working with the dashboard is simple and usually requires little to no technical knowledge—even for users with no coding background.

Cost

Custom-coded websites are generally more expensive because everything has to be built from scratch.

That said, highly customized WordPress websites with advanced features can also become expensive. There is no fixed pricing—everything depends on the designer’s experience and the complexity of the project.

Conclusion

Overall, for medium-sized businesses (anything smaller than companies like Amazon, Uber, or large enterprise platforms), there is no dramatic difference between WordPress and custom-coded websites.

The choice mainly depends on your budget, your needs, and your long-term business goals.

My personal recommendation as a web designer is simple: if you’re just starting out, there’s no need to spend a huge amount of money on a fully custom-coded website—especially if you don’t need something extremely unique or complex.

A well-built WordPress website can cover all your business needs. It’s scalable, SEO-friendly, secure, and can look extremely professional if designed properly.

So for most businesses, there’s no real need to invest heavily in custom development from scratch—you can achieve excellent results at a much lower cost.
