What Is WooCommerce? And Why Do You Need It to Build an Online Store?

If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re thinking about launching an online store. Maybe you’ve already decided to build it with WooCommerce. Or maybe you want to start an online business but have absolutely no idea what WooCommerce is, and you’ve just heard the name a few times.

Either way, I’m glad you’re here.

In this guide, I’ll help you understand everything you need to know to build a really solid online store with WooCommerce and WordPress.

This article is one of the first guides in my WooCommerce Store Building series. The goal is simple: answer every question beginners usually have and walk you through the whole process step by step.

I’m saying this because I’ve been exactly where you are. I know how confusing online stores, WordPress, WooCommerce, SEO, hosting, domains, and all these technical terms can feel when you’re just getting started.

So let’s begin with the very first question…

What Is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is an eCommerce plugin built specifically for WordPress.

Let me explain that in a simpler way.

A little over two decades ago, developers were tired of building every website completely from scratch. Every new project meant writing thousands of lines of code again and again.

So they created a Content Management System (CMS) called WordPress.

The biggest advantage of WordPress was that you could build a website much faster than before, without having to write everything yourself. Even if you didn’t know how to code, you could still create and manage a professional-looking website.

As WordPress became more popular, other developers started creating additional features that weren’t included in the core system. These extra features are what we call plugins.

Now you probably understand what people mean when they say WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin.

WooCommerce is simply a plugin that turns a regular WordPress website into a fully functional online store.

It looks something like this:

WooCommerce Features

WooCommerce is an incredibly powerful plugin.

Honestly, almost everything you’d expect from an online store can be done with WooCommerce. And if there’s ever a feature that isn’t built into WooCommerce itself, there’s usually another plugin that fills the gap.

Let me give you a better idea.

Want to upload products?

No problem.

Need to add product images?

Easy.

Product descriptions?

Done.

Inventory management?

Built in.

Product pricing?

Of course.

Discounts and sale prices?

Absolutely.

Product attributes?

Yes.

Shipping methods and shipping costs?

Supported.

Payment gateways?

Multiple options.

Taxes?

Yes.

Customer information?

Order history?

Sales reports?

Analytics?

You can manage all of these directly inside WooCommerce.

And that’s not all.

WooCommerce also works with your WordPress theme to create essential pages like: Product pages, shop page, cart page, checkout page, customer account page

In other words, a single plugin gives you everything you need to start running an online business.

That’s exactly why WooCommerce has been installed on more than five million websites around the world.

Why WooCommerce? Why Not Custom Development? Why Not Shopify? Who Is WooCommerce For?

The truth is, you can build a great online store using WooCommerce, Shopify, or even a completely custom-coded solution.

Each option has its own strengths.

Personally, though, I usually recommend WooCommerce.

Why?

Because it offers a really nice balance.

Building a WooCommerce website is much easier than developing everything from scratch.

At the same time, unlike Shopify, you don’t have to pay expensive monthly subscription fees just to keep your store running.

And despite being more affordable, WooCommerce is capable of delivering almost everything those other platforms can offer—both in terms of features and design.

That’s what makes it such a popular choice for businesses of all sizes.

How Much Does It Cost to Build an Online Store with WooCommerce?

To build a proper online store, you’ll need a few basic things:

• A hosting plan

• A domain name

• WordPress

• WooCommerce

• A theme

• And sometimes a few additional plugins, depending on what you want your store to do.

I’ll explain hosting and domain names in the next article, and I’ve already talked about WordPress in another guide.

But here’s something you should know right now:

WordPress is completely free.

WooCommerce is also completely free.

The costs usually come from things like your hosting, domain name, premium themes, or paid plugins. Not every store needs premium tools, but in many cases they’re worth the investment.

The total cost depends on which hosting company you choose, which theme you buy (if you even need one), and what extra plugins your store requires.

Don’t worry though.

Throughout this series, I’ll show you exactly what you should buy, what you can safely ignore, and where you can get the best value for your money.

So for now, just remember this:

WordPress and WooCommerce themselves don’t cost you anything.

Now let me answer a few questions that people ask me all the time. Chances are you have some of these questions too.

Can You Sell Digital Products with WooCommerce?

Absolutely.

WooCommerce isn’t limited to physical products.

You can sell almost anything, including: Digital downloads E-books ,courses, software, music, design files, services, memberships, physical products

Basically, if you can sell it online, there’s a good chance WooCommerce can handle it.

Can WooCommerce Create Variable Products?

Yes.

But first, let’s talk about what a variable product actually is.

Some products have a fixed price.

For example, if you’re buying a book, that specific book always has the same price.

Simple.

Now imagine you’re selling fabric.

Customers don’t usually buy an entire roll—they buy it by the meter.

Or maybe you’re selling light bulbs.

The exact same bulb is available in Warm White and Cool White, and each variation has a different price.

Or you’re selling T-shirts in different sizes and colors.

These are called variable products.

Instead of having one fixed price, each variation can have its own price, SKU, stock quantity, image, and other settings.

Thankfully, WooCommerce supports this out of the box, so creating variable products is surprisingly easy.

Can WooCommerce Connect to Accounting and Inventory Management Software?

Absolutely.

One of WooCommerce’s biggest strengths is that it can integrate with many different business systems.

Whether you want to sync your orders with accounting software, manage warehouse inventory, automate invoices, or connect your store to your CRM, there are solutions available.

And yes—I’ll show you exactly how to do that later in this series.

Is WooCommerce Only Good for Small Businesses?

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about WooCommerce.

WooCommerce is an excellent choice for most small and medium-sized businesses.

In fact, it’s capable of handling stores with thousands—or even hundreds of thousands—of products when it’s built properly.

Manufacturers…

Wholesalers…

Retail brands…

Service businesses…

Growing eCommerce companies…

WooCommerce can handle all of them.

Now, what about businesses as large as Amazon or Digikala?

Technically, yes, WooCommerce could be used.

But companies of that size usually choose custom-built software instead.

Why?

Not because WooCommerce is weak.

Because businesses operating at that scale have completely different requirements.

They may need to manage:

• Millions of products

• Millions of orders

• Multiple warehouses

• Multiple vendors

• Complex logistics

• Highly customized workflows

• Massive amounts of traffic every single day

At that point, building a custom platform often makes more business sense.

Ironically, developing all of those custom requirements on top of WordPress can actually become more expensive than building a dedicated system from scratch.

But here’s the important part:

The overwhelming majority of businesses will never reach that level.

For almost every small or medium-sized company—and even many large brands—WooCommerce is more than powerful enough.

Personally, I always believe this:

If you can achieve everything your business needs with a simpler and more affordable solution, why spend several times more money on features you’ll probably never use?
